Incident Type: Execution
Date: September 22, 2006
Event: Fabianus Tibo, Dominggus da Silva and Marinus Riwu are executed by firing squad for their role in Poso's third stage of riots in 2000. Protests erupt around the country, including a few that turn violent on the islands of Flores (where the three were from) and Timor. All appeals for clemency are denied. They maintained their innocence.
Note: The government had many reasons and hopes for the execution of these three men, which was extremely naive. Government officials hoped it would quell the radical religious violence happening in Poso, and would give them good legal ground to go ahead and execute the three Muslim militants behind the 2002 Bali nightclub bombings (which had nothing to do with this case).
